This book is about a baby hippo named Owen and a 130 year old tortes named Mzee.
The first thing that happens is, the baby hippo and his family were drinking water out of a river and then it came , the big flood. It washed the baby hippos family down to the Indian ocean.The baby hippo and his family where all washed up on shore and started to look for food. They went into gardens and even houses just for food. Of course everyone was verry scared since hippos are verry dangerous animals.
After that an other wave hit and took out all of the hippos exsept the baby hippo. He started to swim but got stuck in the seawead and could not get out. The people of the island new that he could not stay in the seawead forever, so they all decided to use a fish net, but the fish net did not work and the hippo broke throu it right away.So they used a shark net and it worked a lot better. Owen jumped on the hippo and didn't calmed him down (like he planned to do) and made him even more mad.So then they draged him to a truck and coverd his head with a rage so could not see what was happaning. Sins owen got the baby hippo in the truck, they decided to name the baby hippo Owen. When they got him in to the truck they drove him to a zoo.
(this is when Mzee comes in).Mzee is a 130 year old tortes.He has no friends and is to him self. When Owen is enterd in the same cage as Mzee, they do not notise each other, but then Owen starts to think Mzee is a mother hippo, so he starts following Mzee. Mzee does not relize hes is being followed untill feeding time. Little by little Mzee starts liking Owen, but then it weres of and Mzee is back to no friends and nugges Owen of, But like beffor Owen keeps trying. In about 2 or 3 months its success, and they still play today!
